Welcome to the Spanish Pronto Reading Practice!

The article below is divided into three sections:

  • Section I: An English translation follows each paragraph
  • Section II: A complete glossary follows each paragraph
  • Section III: A brief glossary defines the most uncommon words from the rest of the article

The full text of this article, and a computer voice synthesizer that will read it to you, is available at: http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2007/03/13/ciencia/1173799585.html (The computerized reader can be activated by clicking on the speaker button just below the headline on the original page.)

You will probably learn the most from this reading practice if you first do your best to figure out the meaning of each Spanish word or sentence yourself before you look at the translation or the glossary. There is no test, but you can test yourself as you go!

NOTE: The translations and definitions shown here are based on how these words are used in this particular article. A single word can have multiple meanings, so do not be surprised to see a word translated or defined differently in some future article. A good dictionary can be very helpful. I recommend the Collins Spanish Unabridged Dictionary (the best there is) or the American Heritage Spanish Dictionary, hardback edition (excellent, affordable, and portable):

EL ASTEROIDE SE APROXIMARÁ A LA TIERRA EN 2029

THE ASTEROID WILL COME CLOSE TO EARTH IN 2029

Pedro Duque pide que España lidere una misión para 'salvar a la Humanidad' del Apophis

Pedro Duque asks Spain to lead a mission to 'save humanity' from Apophis

OLALLA CERNUDA

MADRID.- For Pedro Duque, the first Spanish astronaut, imminent danger has a name [and a last name]. It is called 'Apophis,' an asteroid that will pass very close to Earth in 2029 and that could cause catastrophic damage to our planet. The Apocalypse, however, appears avoidable, at least if enough effort is put into it. "A mission to deflect an asteroid like this one should be given priority," he pointed out, and recalled that a Spanish company has already designed a mission which could disintegrate the object before it gets too close. "Spain could even do it alone, thus making a great contribution to saving humanity," he said.

PART II: INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED
