Welcome to the Spanish Pronto Reading Practice!

The article below is divided into two sections:

  • Section I: An English translation follows each paragraph
  • Section II: A complete glossary follows the section

You will probably learn the most from this reading practice if you first do your best to figure out the meaning of each Spanish word or sentence yourself before you look at the translation or the glossary. There is no test, but you can test yourself as you go!

NOTE: The translations and definitions shown here are based on how these words are used in this particular article. A single word can have multiple meanings, so do not be surprised to see a word translated or defined differently in some future article. A good dictionary can be very helpful. I recommend the Collins Spanish Unabridged Dictionary (the best there is) or the American Heritage Spanish Dictionary, hardback edition (excellent, affordable, and portable):

PART I: BEGINNER TO ADVANCED

La pobreza no se resuelve con caridad: Calderón

“Poverty is not solved by charity,” says [Mexican President Felipe] Calderón

El problema de la pobreza no se resuelve con caridad o acciones filantrópicas, sino a través de acciones categóricas para revertir el círculo de miseria, dijo ayer el presidente Felipe Calderón.

The poverty problem is not solved by charity or philanthropic action, but through categorical action to undo the cycle of poverty, President Felipe Calderón said yesterday.

Por ello, expuso, la reforma hacendaria propuesta al Congreso de la Unión busca superar la pobreza en la que se encuentra 60 por ciento de las familias mexicanas que viven en el campo, “porque —advirtió— si no corregimos esa desigualdad ahora, se seguirán incubando en todo el país y particularmente en el campo, rencores y agravios que se exacerban con intenciones políticas y que pueden romper totalmente las posibilidades de desarrollo del país”.

Because of this, he explained, the budget reforms proposed to the national Congress seek to overcome the poverty in which 60 percent of rural Mexican families find themselves, “because,” he warned, “if we do not correct that inequality now, then throughout the nation, and especially in the countryside, resentments and grievances will continue to fester which are exacerbated by political motives and which can completely destroy the nation’s chances for development.”

PART II: INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED
