Agotando las últimas horas de vacaciones. No sólo quedan pocos días ya para regresar al tajo, sino que también los más pequeños de la casa comprueban cómo se va acercando la hora de volver a la escuela. El principal indicio es el propio clima, que está dejando días más frescos, tardes cada vez menos bochornosas y noches con temperaturas mucho más bajas que hace tan sólo unos días.

The last hours of vacation running out. Not only are there few days remaining now before returning to the grind, but even the smallest in the house realize how the time to return to school is coming closer. The main indicator is the climate itself, which is allowing cooler days, afternoons that are less and less sultry, and nights with temperatures much lower than just a few days ago.

Por ello, es el momento de que las familias empiecen a organizar lo necesario para iniciar el curso escolar con todo lo imprescindible. Y junto a la ilusión de los pequeños por volver a ver a sus compañeros de clase, se encuentra la preocupación de los padres sólo de pensar en los gastos que se les vienen encima.

For that reason, it is time for families to begin organizing everything necessary for starting the school year with all the essentials. And, along with the little ones' desire to see their classmates again, there is the parents' worry just from thinking about the expenses that are overtaking them.

No es para menos, ya que el desembolso que se debe hacer ahora es importante, repercutiendo sensiblemente en el bolsillo del ciudadano, ya de por sí bastante deteriorado debido al pago de las vacaciones estivales y a la subida de las hipotecas. La cada vez más complicada situación económica del almeriense provoca que dos de cada tres ciudadanos no puedan ahorrar, según el último informe de la Fundación de Cajas de Ahorros (Funcas).

It is not unjustified, given that the outlay which must be made now is a major one, with repercussions which will be felt in the citizen's pocketbook, already much diminished from paying for the summer vacation and from the rise in mortgages. The more and more complicated economic situation of the Almerian causes two out of three citizens to be unable to save, according to the latest report from the Savings Bank Foundation.

¿Cuánto habrá que añadir este mes a los gastos ya rutinarios? Según un estudio elaborado por la Unión de Consumidores de España (UCE), el dinero que los padres tendrán que desembolsar para equipar a sus hijos en el colegio rondará los 210 euros por alumno en un centro público. Los gastos se multiplican en el caso de que el niño acuda a uno privado, elevándose el coste a 1.560 euros aproximadamente. La factura para los concertados alcanza los 690 euros.

How much will have to be added this month beyond the normal expenses? According to a study prepared by the Spanish Consumers Union (UCE), the money that parents will have to pay out to outfit their children in school will approach 210 euros per student in a public school. The expenses multiply in the case of a student attending a private one, the cost rising to approximately 1,560 euros. The bill for the state-subsidized ones reaches 690 euros.

Estos gastos corresponden a la compra de libros, matrícula, uniformes, comedor, transporte escolar o diverso material. Pero además, también habría que incluir el dinero destinado, entre otros, a ropa nueva para comenzar la temporada otoño-invierno.

These expenses are for the purchase of books, registration, uniforms, school lunches, school transportation or miscellaneous items. But in addition, one should also include the money for, among other things, new clothes for starting the fall/winter season.

En los centros en los que se exige que los alumnos lleven uniforme, es decir, en los colegios privados y concertados, el gasto oscila entre los 276 y 501 euros para las niñas, mientras que los varones gastan algo más, entre 282 y 517 euros en la vestimenta que usarán a diario para acudir al centro escolar.

In the schools in which students are required to wear a uniform, that is, in the private schools and the state-subsidized ones, the cost varies between 276 and 501 euros for the girls, while the boys spend somewhat more, between 282 and 517 euros on the clothing that they will use every day to attend school.

En el coste total que ofrece la UCE también se incluye lo que habrá que pagar por el comedor, servicio que ayuda a conciliar la vida familiar y laboral de los padres trabajadores. En el caso de Almería, el precio medio es de algo más de dos euros al día. La UCE aconseja que cuando el niño acuda a los comedores, los padres se impliquen en la supervisión de la dieta.

In the total cost presented by the UCE is also included what one would have to pay for school lunches, a service that helps working parents balance their home and work lives. In the case of Almería, the median price is a little more than two euros per day. The UCE advises that when the child goes to the cafeteria, parents involve themselves in dietary supervision.

No obstante, es cierto que el precio puede variar sensiblemente, ya que los padres también pueden optar por contratar los servicios de aula matinal, donde los pequeños pueden desayunar y estar atendidos por profesionales hasta la hora de entrar a clase; o por la ludoteca, es decir, la realización de actividades variadas por las tardes si los progenitores trabajan. Son ya muchos los colegios de la provincia que ofertan estas posibilidades.

Nevertheless, it is true that the price can vary noticeably, since parents can also choose to pay for the services of a morning classroom, where the little ones can eat breakfast and be cared for by professionals until it is time to go to school, or for a recreation center, that is, doing various activities in the afternoon if the parents are working. Many schools in the province now offer these possibilities.

Sin embargo, existe un alivio en lo que a la adquisición de libros se refiere desde la puesta en marcha del Programa de Gratuidad de Libros de Texto de la Junta de Andalucía. En el curso 2007/08 se implantará en primero y tercero de Educación Secundaria, después de que los estudiantes de Primaria se beneficien del sistema desde hace ya unas temporadas. Mientras, segundo y cuarto de ESO deberán esperar un tiempo.

However, there is relief with respect to the acquisition of books since the start of the Government of Andalucía's Free Textbook Program. For the 2007-2008 school year, it will be implemented in the first and third years of junior high, after the elementary students have benefited from the system for the last few seasons already. Meanwhile, the second and fourth years of junior high will have to wait a while.

Book vouchers

Los progenitores podrán recoger los cheques-libro para 1º y 3º de ESO, además de para 1º y 2º de Primaria. Este último ciclo sólo renovará los dos primeros cursos porque es un material compuesto sobre todo por fichas, en las que se trabaja. Para los cursos restantes, los ejemplares cambiarán de manos en concepto de préstamo.

Parents will be able to pick up the book vouchers for the 1st and 3rd years of junior high, as well as for the 1st and 2nd of elementary. This last cycle, only the first two years will be renewed, because it is material made up mostly of cards, on which the work is done. For the remaining years, the volumes will change hands as loans.

Se hará así hasta que transcurran cuatro años y se renueven otra vez. De esta forma, este curso se beneficiarán de los libros gratis un total de 63.159 alumnos, de los que 44.859 serán de Primaria y el resto de Secundaria. El ahorro familiar variará entre los 105 euros de Primaria hasta llegar los 230 del tercer curso de ESO en el caso del mayor desembolso. Para los alumnos de segundo y cuarto de ESO que todavía quedan fuera de este programa, el gasto se elevará alrededor de 200 euros en los colegios.

It will be done like this until four years have passed and they are renewed again. Por su parte, el Ministerio de Educación convoca también unas becas para la adquisición de libros de texto y material didáctico complementario para el curso académico 2007/08. Este tipo de subvenciones podrán ser solicitadas por las familias del alumnado que vaya a cursar estudios de segundo y cuarto de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria en los centros sostenidos por fondos públicos.

However, the Minister of Education is also announcing some scholarships for acquiring text books and complementary educational material for the 2007-2008 school year. These kinds of subsidies could be requested by families of the students who are going the be in the second and fourth year of junior high in the schools supported by public funds.

Son precisamente los que de momento se quedan fuera del Programa de Gratuidad de Libros de Texto de la Junta de Andalucía, los alumnos de segundo y cuarto de ESO, también podrán tener ayudas económicas.

It is precisely the ones that, for now, remain outside of the Government of Andalucía's Free Textbook Program— the second and fourth-year junior high students—can now also have economic assistance.

Desde la UCE recomienda a los padres acudir a distintos establecimientos para comparar precios. Afirman que se pueden obtener importantes descuentos dependiendo del comercio al que se acuda, aunque hay que tener cuidado en que faciliten todo el material necesario, por lo que es importante que el centro escolar lo anuncie con suficiente antelación. De este modo se da tiempo a los padres para ver distintas opciones y comprar lo que más nos interese. La cuesta no llega sólo en enero.

From the UCE comes the recommendation that parents go to different establishments to compare prices. They assert that major discounts can be obtained depending on which business one goes to, even though one must be sure that all the necessary material is provided, which is why it is important for the school to announce it far enough in advance. In this way, parents are given enough time to look at different options and buy what interests us most. The big bills don't arrive just in January.
